  • About NSS

  • About the NSS

The National Service Scheme (NSS) was established with the goal of bridging the gap between campuses and communities. It focuses on motivating the student youth to contribute towards the development of villages and communities. Inspired by the vision of Mahatma Gandhi, who believed that the country’s progress depends on student involvement in community welfare, the NSS helps students engage in meaningful social service.
At Kuppam Engineering College, the NSS Unit was introduced in 2010-11 with the participation of hundreds of students. The unit fosters social service both on and off-campus through NSS volunteers. The primary aim of NSS is to enhance student’s personalities through community service.
    NSS Program Requirements and Certification
To be a part of NSS, students are required to dedicate a minimum of 120 hours to the program each academic year. After completing a total of 240 hours over two years and attending at least one special camp, students are eligible to receive a certificate of participation.
The NSS Unit of Kuppam Engineering College offers a platform for students to contribute to nation building by engaging in community work. NSS volunteers focus on improving the standard of living for the less fortunate and carry out various activities to raise awareness on health, sanitation, and other social issues. Through regular health camps, cleanliness drives, and outreach programs in adopted villages, NSS volunteers work to motivate people to maintain a clean and healthy environment.
    Objectives of NSS
The core objectives of the National Service Scheme are:
    1. Understanding the Community: Helping students learn about the community they serve.
    2. Self-awareness: Encouraging students to understand their role in relation to the community.
    3. Identifying and Solving Problems: Involving students in identifying community problems and contributing to finding solutions.
    4. Developing Civic Responsibility: Instilling a sense of social and civic responsibility.
    5. Practical Application of Knowledge: Applying academic knowledge to address community issues.
    6. Group Living and Responsibility: Developing skills for working with groups and sharing responsibilities.
    7. Community Participation: Encouraging students to engage with and mobilize the community.
    8. Leadership and Democratic Attitudes: Promoting leadership qualities and fostering democratic values.
    9. Disaster Management: Preparing students to respond to emergencies and natural disasters.
    10. National Integration and Social Harmony: Promoting unity and social harmony across diverse communities.
    NSS Motto
The motto of the National Service Scheme is ‘NOT ME BUT YOU’, which emphasizes the essence of democratic living, selfless service, and empathy for others. It underscores the importance of the welfare of society as a whole and encourages volunteers to contribute to the greater good. This motto is reflected in the daily activities of the NSS program, where service to others takes precedence over self-interest.
    NSS Symbol
The NSS symbol is inspired by the Rath wheel of the Konark Sun Temple in Orissa, India. The wheel represents the cycle of creation, preservation, and release, symbolizing the continuous movement of life across time and space. It signifies the progression of life and the on-going efforts of NSS in driving social transformation and upliftment. The wheel’s design is a reminder of the continuity and change inherent in societal progress.
